Shock the Marketers

It is amazing how marketers play the “individuality” card with such success, managing to get people to buy into the same product. One writer aptly summed it up, saying, “Always remember that you are absolutely unique… just like everybody else.” We are not as distinctive in mindset as we would like to think we are. This is odd as a culture because few realize or appreciate that this very maverick mentality is Christianity’s strong suit – non-conformity. Christians are the quintessential “free spirit.”

Paul said, And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2). In other words, don’t be like everybody else – be a Christian. Oh, I know there are lots of folks who claim to be Christian but look at their fruits (Matthew 7:16). They lie, hate, and hurt with the worst of the world, then piously pray in pews on Sunday, like that makes everything better. To the contrary, Christians are counter-culture; and more so in this day and age. We do not lie, cheat or steal. We do not retaliate, hate or spew profanities. We do not murder the unborn or support perversion, even when our culture re-defines a sin to make it more acceptable. We do not buy the lie Satan is selling.

Christianity is a daily-lived discipline and only those who rise to the challenge of the “strait… and narrow” achieve the crown (Matthew 7:14; 1 Corinthians 9:25). Ignore the sin-vendors and shock the marketers: don’t buy into the rot, “Buy the truth and sell it not” (Proverbs 23:23).
