The Sacrifice

“Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together” (Gen 22:6).

As a dad to three boys, this scene has always been an emotional one for me when I read it. I try to identify with what emotions Abraham must be experiencing. This is his “only son” whom he loves (Gen 22:2). This is the son of promise. This is the son he dreamed about for so many years and has now watched grow up from the time he was a baby.

Now, he has a knife in his hand. He has fire in his other hand. He puts the wood on his son. Can you imagine the thoughts running through Abraham’s head as he does this? He is about to sacrifice his only son, and he lays the wood for the sacrifice on Isaac!

Now, think about what ran through the Father’s  mind as he saw His only Son pick up the wood.

“…and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha.” (John 19:17). Let all you do this week be done with an eye on the cross and what Jesus has done for you.
